Whether you’re hanging a picture, putting up a shelf, or tackling DIY projects around the home, you need some basic tools to get the job done right. Here are the must-have tools you’ll want to keep handy.
1. Hammer
You probably guessed this one. A hammer is a multipurpose tool that can be used for many DIY projects such as hanging art or putting cabinets together.
There are a few different types of hammers, but for simple home improvement tasks, a standard claw hammer is the most versatile option.
When choosing your hammer, make sure you go for one with a comfy grip to minimize strain on your hand, wrist and elbow.
2. Screwdrivers
From assembling furniture to installing ceiling lights, you’ll need a screwdriver for many jobs around the home. You likely already have one. But do you have the right size for every job?
Having the right screwdriver is important to prevent slipping when you’re turning a screw. Make sure you have a few different types and sizes handy. A good place to start is with a Phillips and a flathead. There are also kits that come with multiple sizes of screwdrivers, or one handle and multiple bits.
3. Wrenches
Wrenches are used for gripping, tightening and loosening things like nuts and bolts. You may also need one for bike and car maintenance or for fixing any plumbing issues in your home.
They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, so an adjustable wrench is a good place to start.
4. Pliers
Pliers are handy for grasping small items like nails, nuts or bolts. They give you a better grip and more precision than your bare hands, which can help make tasks easier.
You may need pliers to reach somewhere your hands can’t get to, or for potentially hazardous jobs, such as pulling out a rusty screw from an old piece of furniture.
5. Cordless drill
If you buy any power tool, make it a cordless drill. They’re helpful for making holes and driving screws quickly without putting strain on your hands and wrists.
When shopping for a drill, invest in a quality one to ensure it works efficiently. If you plan on doing a lot of DIY projects, a drill with a brushless motor will last longer.
6. Tape measure
Accuracy is everything when it comes to DIY projects. Make sure you have these two types of tape measures:
- A soft ribbon tape measure for measuring round or irregularly shaped items or areas
- A retractable metal tape measure to accurately measure large items and areas
7. Level
If you want to put up a floating shelf, or hang a beautiful piece of art just right, you’ll need a level.
A level ensures a surface is perfectly horizontal or vertical, which can be very hard to tell with the naked eye.
8. Safety equipment
Most DIY projects require safety gear. Make sure you are protecting your eyes, face and hands.
For starters, keep gloves, safety goggles and a face mask handy.
